What is X-ray Inspection?

What is X-ray Inspection?

X-rays are electromagnetic waves with short wavelengths, ranging from 0.0006–80 nm. Such electromagnetic waves possess strong penetration capability, enabling them to pass through materials of varying densities. They also exhibit good penetration for objects that cannot be penetrated by visible light.
X-ray inspection can convert these varying light intensities into corresponding images, which clearly display the internal structure of the object under test and enable non-destructive detection of the object.

Principle of X-ray Inspection?

X-rays are generated by using a cathode ray tube to produce high-energy electrons, which then collide with a metal target. During the collision, the electrons decelerate abruptly, and the kinetic energy lost due to this deceleration is released in the form of X-rays. X-rays have short wavelengths but carry high energy as electromagnetic radiation.

Applications of X-ray Inspection:

X-ray inspection is widely used in the industrial sector, mainly covering electronic products, electronic components, semiconductor components, connectors, plastic parts, BGA, LED, IC chips, SMT, CPU, heating wires, capacitors, integrated circuits and circuit boards, lithium batteries, ceramics, castings, as well as the medical and food industries.

  1. It can be used to inspect whether certain metal materials and their components, electronic components or LED components have cracks and foreign objects.
  2. It is capable of detecting and analyzing the occurrence of internal displacement in BGA, circuit boards and other products.
  3. It can be applied to detect and judge whether there are defects such as wire breakage in BGA soldering like cold solder and virtual solder.
  4. It enables the detection and analysis of the internal conditions of cables, plastic parts, microelectronic systems and potting assemblies.
  5. It is used to inspect ceramics and castings for air bubbles, cracks and other flaws.
  6. It conducts defect inspection on IC packages, such as delamination, cracking, voids and other issues.
  7. In the printing industry, its application is mainly reflected in inspecting for misalignment, bridging, open circuits and other anomalies during the circuit board production process.
  8. In SMT processes, it is primarily used to detect voids in solder joints.
  9. In integrated circuits, it is mainly for inspecting various connecting wires for open circuits, short circuits or abnormal connections.

After gaining a certain understanding of X-ray testing equipment, we will be more targeted when purchasing such equipment.
